They have made me an academic of the very ancient and prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence. Actually, they haven't made me an academic as I write yet because first I will have to give a lecture on an assigned topic and I am here in Florence this morning because at 4 p.m. I will take my 'exam'. The title of the lecture I have been assigned is "Architecture of Financial Power". I know the Florentines well because I studied and lived here for 8 years and so I am not surprised that they sought a theme to test me. And they succeeded.
But I also enjoy it. I've collected a few ideas and even though I struggled at the beginning, in the end I will give a good lecture, maybe even differently from what the organisers expect, but they will not be disappointed. It is always useful to approach contemporary issues from different directions and this is a direction that I alone would never have sought. We are increasingly submerged in this financial world, whether we want to be or not. We are all part of it, those who benefit and those who only get into trouble, those who gain and those who lose. Finance is making money with money, and ever since some wretch invented it, we have based our lives on this system. Perhaps even more than life itself, perhaps the very reason for existing, because we attribute happiness and sadness to money.
Reasoning about finance, capitalism, consumerism, democracy, social and climate crisis, distortions and possible alternatives is never a waste of time, in fact I think it is the right thing to do because a single, healthy, true and contradiction-free solution has not yet been found and there does not seem to be one at hand.
Financial power is the typical expression of capitalism, the economic system most often associated with democracy in modern societies, and this wonderful democracy we know how many flaws it has. The architecture of financial power is evaluated according to the criteria of capitalist society and the driving forces of technological evolution, which judge the products of the market and assign a money value to everything.
But what is money? According to Yuval Noah Harari, 'money is a story invented and shared by human beings in order to understand each other, a means of communication, a means of attributing value to things and distinguishing what is relevant from what is not relevant."
Anthropologists continue to question when an animal began to process symbolic thought and how this ability to refer to abstract, conceptual and non-tangible elements reached the point where the symbol takes on a value greater than reality itself. At this point, things take on value not only for their functional and material aspect, but for the symbolic value attributed to them. And this symbolic value is nothing other than imagination, fantasy, storytelling: the better we are at imagining, fantasising and storytelling, the more successful we are and the more these qualities become 'money', i.e. the value we attribute to symbols. All this has nothing to do with the impulsive buying and unbridled consumerism to which we are subjected, precisely because we can never enjoy imaginations, fantasies and stories if we do not find the time to live free from the yoke of accumulating finance.

Architect of financial power/
