Sustainability is creativity
サステナビリティとは創造性
The step that humanity is being asked to take at this moment is fundamental for the survival of the species, but it is very difficult, complicated and deeply involved. It is full of uncertainties, contradictions and paradoxes. It is very easy to contest and there are many arguments for convenient opposition. But I am convinced that even the most sceptical are aware of the crucial nature of the moment, despite all the misunderstandings that have arisen in recent years, whether ecological, political, social or generational. And the list does not end there. The idea that it is relatively simple to define a single, universal recipe and impose a rule that applies to everyone in order to make the world liveable and sustainable has become an ephemeral chimera, and few still believe in it.
We should come up with new arguments and tackle the issue with renewed energy in order to be efficient and constructive. As an architect, I rack my brains in search of something that will reactivate the theme of sustainability with renewed attraction in discussions and debates about the future of living, of large and small cities, of every social conglomerate. In the field of construction, I find contradictions and paradoxes at every turn. I am disconsolate, distressed and desperate because I cannot find any decisive argument; everything has a negative and contrary aspect. There is no longer any distance between right and wrong, there is no way to find a full and convincing reason to do anything.
It is an issue that concerns each of us and that each of us must resolve for ourselves. There are many forms of sustainability, at least as many as the number of people walking the planet. Everyone must find a new way of thinking and acting. A new philosophy and a new attitude. And since our minds and what we believe come first, and creativity is a mental attitude, we must stimulate our ability to react and find new solutions.
These are the notes I made to give rhythm and maintain consistency in the conference.

5. ‘Every choice we make shapes the balance of nature.’ - Responsibility stems from decision-making in the context of environmental sustainability.
6. ‘The pursuit of knowledge reveals more questions than answers.’ - The ongoing journey of learning and discovery.
7. ‘Sustainability is a tapestry woven from different threads of human experience.’ - Sustainability is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but a complex interplay of cultural and individual perspectives.
8. ‘In the face of uncertainty, creativity becomes our guiding light.’ - The importance of innovative thinking in dealing with unfamiliar situations.
9. ‘To love is to feel; to have compassion is to understand.’ - Awareness comes from compassion.
10. ‘Technology is a double-edged sword; its advantages and disadvantages are often intertwined.’ - The nature of technological advances is twofold.

いま人類に求められている一歩は、種の存続にとって根源的なものでありながらきわめて困難で、複雑で、深く絡み合っています。それは不確実性、矛盾、そしてパラドックスに満ちています。反論することは非常に容易で、都合のよい反対意見も数多く存在します。しかし私は近年生じてきた生態的、政治的、社会的、世代的な誤解の数々にもかかわらず、最も懐疑的な人々でさえこの瞬間がいかに重大であるかを理解していると確信しています。その要因はそれだけにとどまりません。世界を住みやすく、持続可能なものにするために、単一で普遍的な処方箋を定義し、すべての人に当てはまる規則を押し付ければよい、という考えはすでに儚いキメラとなり、それを信じる人はほとんど残っていません。
私たちは新たな議論を生み出し、新鮮なエネルギーをもってこの問題に取り組まなければ、効果的かつ建設的であることはできません。建築家として私は暮らしの未来、大都市や小都市、あらゆる社会的集合体についての議論や討論の中で、サステナビリティというテーマに再び魅力を与える何かを見出そうと思考を巡らせています。建設の分野では至るところで矛盾とパラドックスに突き当たります。決定的な論拠を見いだせないことに私は落胆し、苦悩し、絶望しています。あらゆるものに否定的で相反する側面があり、もはや正と誤の距離は失われ、何かを行うための完全で説得力のある理由を見つけることができないのです。
これは私たち一人ひとりに関わる問題であり、同時に各自が自ら解決しなければならない課題です。サステナビリティには多様な形があり、その数は地球上を歩く人の数と同じくらい多いと言えるでしょう。誰もが新しい考え方と行動の仕方、新しい哲学と新しい姿勢を見つけなければなりません。そして思考や信念がまず先にあり、創造性が精神的な態度である以上、私たちは反応する力を刺激し新たな解決策を見いだす必要があります。
以下は、講演にリズムを与え一貫性を保つために私が書き留めたメモです。
「創造性は矛盾への解毒剤です。」サステナビリティの複雑さに向き合うには、創造的思考が求められます。
「生命は最も硬直した形の中にも持続します。」活力は、予期せぬ場所にこそ見いだされます。
「私たちの技術理解は先見性によって制限されています。」技術進歩の長期的影響を予測することの難しさです。
「思いやりは身近なものを超えて広がります。」共感は、容易に共感できる存在だけでなく、あらゆる生命を包み込みます。
「私たちの選択の一つひとつが自然の均衡を形づくります。」環境的持続可能性における責任は、意思決定から生まれます。
「知を追求するほど答えよりも多くの問いが現れます。」学びと発見の終わりなき旅です。
「サステナビリティは人間経験の異なる糸で織られたタペストリーです。」それは画一的な解決策ではなく、文化的・個人的視点が交錯する複雑な営みです。
「不確実性の中では創造性が私たちの導きの光となります。」未知の状況に対処するうえでの革新的思考の重要性です。
「愛するとは感じることであり、思いやりとは理解することです。」気づきは、思いやりから生まれます。
「技術は諸刃の剣であり、その利点と欠点はしばしば絡み合っています。」技術進歩の二面性を示しています。
それでは、そろそろ行かなければなりません。まもなく講演が始まります。
